Wiyaala
Wiyaala is a brilliant and exhilarating talent who holds a special place in our hearts after her incredible performance as the star of an emotionally charged night at the SL last September. If you were there (or at her recent cameo at one of our fundraisers), you know what we mean. Even if not, we guarantee that by the end of her show, you’ll be feeling excited and inspired!
The award winning singer-songwriter from Funsi in the Upper West Region of Ghana, whose name means “the doer,” sings in Sissala, Waale, Dagaare and English. She cleverly blends language to create a unique Afro-folk sound whilst combining her vocals with guitar and calabash.
Raised in Funsi, she began performing at the age of five, guided by her mother, who was a choir singer. Wiyaala gained fame after winning Ghana's 2012 Vodafone Icons reality show. Her albums include ‘Wiyaala’ (2014), ‘Sissala Goddess’ (2018), ‘African Polyglot’ and her current set ‘Segerige,’ released last summer.
An advocate for children's rights and female empowerment, she’s worked with UNICEF Ghana, often addressing exploitation through her lyrics. Wiyaala designs her stunning stage outfits to honour northern Ghana’s traditions and has built an Arts Centre, radio station, guest house and restaurant in Funsi. In 2024, she was included in the BBC's 100 Women's list of inspiring and influential women.
Now you see what an extraordinary woman she is! Don’t miss this very special show in which Wiyaala will perform two sets with her guitarist Miha Petric. The heart of Ghana comes to Sutton High Street - or as she would put it, #Roarrr!!
Doors 7pm, show starts 8.15pm. Mixed seating and standing (and dancing!).
