Kora virtuoso Sophie Lukacs
Few artists weave tradition and innovation like Sophie Lukacs, who blends the 21-string West African kora with a singer-songwriter's heart and a voice fluent in four languages.
Budapest-born, Montreal-based, Sophie's journey took her from classical violin to a seven-year immersion in Mali, studying with kora legends Toumani Diabaté and collaborating with the acclaimed Habib Koité. Her debut album 'Bamako' earned Global Roots Album of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Sophie performs music from her forthcoming sophomore album, joined by Cheick Niang on guitar and Noel Mpiaza on calabash — a trio whose sound moves effortlessly between West African tradition and contemporary songwriting, sung in English, French, Hungarian, and Bambara.
