What do you get when you mesh four-part harmonies and lush Americana-soul instrumentation together A great evening! Think Fleetwood Mac, without the drugs and messy relationships. The BBC raved that Nell has “a sultry, smoky-edged, bourbon-laced voice that places Bryden somewhere between Peggy Lee and Julie London to flattering effect.” She is the undeniable matriarch of a band of incredible talent, and her voice is powerful enough to make your jaw drop. She’ll make you cry (in a good way),and her stories and stage banter will have you laughing along with her band. It’s an evening with someone at the top of her game who has built a devoted following. The native New Yorker grew up in a bohemian artist’s loft in Brooklyn, her mother a classical soprano and her father an oil painter. She got her singer songwriter start in the folk clubs of Boston before moving back to try to conquer her hometown. When the Big Apple chewed her up and spat her out, she spent a decade in London honing her craft, touring Europe extensively, playing upwards of 250 shows a year. Having released her debut album “What Does It Take” in 2009 under her own record label, she became known as a BBC Radio 2 darling, and went on to enjoy an incredible 21 consecutive playlisted singles — a record-breaker even for major label artists. Her song about her experience in 9/11, called “Sirens,” from her second album “Shake The Tree,” was covered by Cher. Known as an artist who’s “at home” on stage, she’s supported Gary Barlow, Chris Rea, Counting Crows, KT Tunstall, and Duane Eddy, among others, and played numerous festivals including CarFest, V Festival, and Proms In The Park. Nell has released eight studio albums, as well as “The Collection” in 2020, an anthology of her 21 radio singles. The latest album is “I Love You So Much I’m Blind.” She lives in New York with her two dogs and a cat that inadvertently feature in her home studio recordings, notably her remote performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra during the Coronavirus lockdown, for Ken Bruce’s House Music Sessions.
